New Year Resolution
Lindsay Stone interviewed me for tips on making and keeping New Year resolutions. These resolutions can appeal to us for the fresh start and forgiveness of the past and I think the passing of time and ritual of marking the new year is a good time to reflect and take stock of priorities in life. The ritual may be enough for us to take a step in a preferred direction we have not previously allowed ourselves. I suggest we listen to desire, our deepest desires and then work on taking a small, measurable, planned step in the new direction. Too often a resolution can come from “shoulds” and the Judgmental Self which typically is not a sustainable motivator. Resolutions also appeal to perfectionism, with the idea we can make a pristinely clean change in a pristine new year. This perfectionism can be a set-up for failure. We are often better off with successive approximations toward a goal. Check out Lindsay Stone’s reporting on the topic.
